The Makalu region lies in eastern Nepal between the Everest and Kanchenjunga regions of the Sankhuwasabha district. Makalu region is also known for Barun valley in the trekking industry of Nepal. The Barun valley offers beautiful contrasts, where trekkers can see the colorful flowers, high waterfalls, deep gorge, enormous rocky hills rise from the green forest, wide glacier, and, pristine snowcapped peaks. This splendid valley is also home to rare flora and fauna. In 1992, this area was established as Makalu Barun National Park. Currently, it is managed by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation.
Mount Makalu, the 5th highest mountain in the world is the prime reason for trekkers in this area. This protected area is home to giant peaks like Chamlang (7,319m), Baruntse (7,129), and Mera (6,654m). The Makalu region is a part of the Sacred Himalayan landscape where 73% of it located in Nepal. The region itself is a popular route to Makalu Base Camp trek, Sherpani Col Pass trek, and Arun valley trek. Most of the treks start by flying to Tumlingtar from Kathmandu.
